The issue of environmental awareness is one that has plagued our country for centuries now and, despite massive campaign for environmental protection and saving our Mother Earth from various man made destructions, this will continue to outbreak in our country without the implementation of drastic operational and individual changes. Continued determination towards environmental awareness cannot, however, be solely attributed to the maintenance of current environmental conditions.
In order to support the call of our government in restoring the state of our environment, the Providers Multi-Purpose Cooperative in its little way continuously observe its advocacy in environmental protection and awareness through inclusion of various environmental protection projects in its Community Development Program. For CY 2019 the following projects were launched in addition to the existing activities:
1.) Tree planting activity in partnership with its members – for members availing any products or services of the cooperative, a tree seedling is given to be planted in their backyard or any place of their choice.
As known to all, trees offer environmental, social as well as economic benefits. Trees exhale oxygen and inhale carbon dioxide to maintain the ecological balance of the environment. They also absorb all the harmful gases and give us fresh and pure air to breathe. Planting more trees means fresher air and purer atmosphere. The growing pollution could be mitigated and controlled and its effect can be undermined by planting trees. The places inhabited by large number of trees are quite cooler compared to the concrete jungles that cannot do without air conditioners. Trees build a sheet to protect us from the harmful ultra violet rays and also helps in controlling water pollution and preventing soil erosion.
2.) Use of reusable personalized tumblers to avoid the frequent use of single-used plastic bottles or cups and address the issue of piling of non- biodegradable materials in the premises of Providers MPC, reusable personalized tumblers were provided to all PMPC officers and employees. This will be for daily use and during meetings, conferences or any co-op activities.
Plastic is everywhere! We love it because it is waterproof, relatively cheap, durable, and versatile. Furthermore, we use plastics in virtually every shape and form in our daily lives. It carries our drinks, holds our shampoos, and keeps our foods fresh. According to many researches, humans are consuming resources and producing waste at a greater scale than ever before. Data indicates that global material resource use rose at about twice the rate of population. Plastic makes our lives incredibly convenient, disposable, and easy, but most of us rarely think about the effects it has on the environment. Unlike other materials, it never really goes away. Plastic does break down, but in a landfill it takes up to hundreds years; worse, it doesn’t ever become other materials, it just breaks into microscopic pieces of plastic that are non-biodegradable. From there, plastic remains most often find their way into our body of waters. But it’s not just the end of a plastic’s life cycle that we need to worry about, when plastic is produced, it is made from toxic materials too and these chemicals are known to cause severe sickness to human.
These simple acts of Providers MPC is gearing towards a stronger campaign on the protection of our environment. Yes, change is really inevitable but we can control it by instilling self-discipline and be mindful on the effects of our actions.
